How I Got Here

I’ve always been obsessed with storytelling. I started out as a documentary filmmaker — even earned a Pulitzer fellowship — but quickly learned that the film industry isn’t a meritocracy. It’s gatekept, relationship-based, and often leaves brilliant, hardworking people out of the room.

As a scrappy underdog, I relied on honest advice and behind-the-scenes knowledge to get ahead. And I became the go-to friend who’d fix your résumé, prep you for interviews, and help you ask for more money.

In 2020, when my freelance work stalled during the pandemic, I downloaded TikTok — and thought, what if I could use this platform to share the kind of career advice I wish someone had given me? One of my first viral videos? How to write “McDonald’s” on a résumé. The response blew me away.

Turns out, people weren’t just hungry for jobs — they were hungry for guidance. For clarity. For someone who gets it.

Today, I’ve built a platform with over 7 million followers, a beloved newsletter, a book (The Secret Language of Work), and a new career discovery platform called StupidFish. My mission is simple: help people help themselves — with empathy, strategy, and a little humor along the way.
